23. Summarize

Favorite Discoveries: Flickr, online image generator, online productivity, YouTube.
Lifelong goals: I always want to learn and keep up to date so I can recommend new technology to customers. But, I honestly don't see myself using most of these things.
Unexpected outcomes: I'm amazed at how much time one can spend on the computer. You could stop going out and meeting with people and live you entire life online.
Improvements: 23 things is a bit much, I could have used about 10.
Participation: Overall I thought the program was useful and gave a good overview of what's out there.
My learning experience: I'm not a techie person, but atleast I have some knowledge of new cutting edge technology.

22. eBooks

Project Gutenberg: It's great to be able to read books online. The html format works well, you can look through the table of contents and go to the page you desire. The titles are old and somewhat obscure, but I did find an old horse lameness book that has been out of print.
Overdrive: great for PC users! Lots of great titles and very easy to use. I own a Mac, so I can't download from home.

21. Podcasts

I looked at podcast.net and podcastalley.com. I think podcast is easier to use, in fact I couldn't get things to play on podcastalley, it just wanted me to upload the feed without previewing it.
You can find just about any topic, I found an interesting interview of librarians from the Sacramento State Library. I also added a furniture topic feed to my Bloglines account, which I'll never check.

Danger! I try to stay away from YouTube, because I could waste my life away watching dogs do funny things.

Overall, the site is very easy to navigate. It would be fun to have a "library community" or add video posts to our own library site.

19. Web 2.0 Award Winners

I checked out Upcoming, a yahoo events site. It won first prize, although many top venues have not uploaded their info. Maybe it needs to catch on a bit more first. Overall I think it will be good, once more events/venues are on it.
You can search by location or event name in the U.S.

18. Online Productivity

I went to Google Docs, created an account and uploaded my time sheet which is a Word doc. It messed it up a bit, text is smaller and things aren't aligned as well. But, overall it was there and usable.
We had someone come in the other day and Sarah used this feature to convert the patrons file into something our computers could read.

17. Wiki Sandbox

I added my blog to the Maryland Libraries Sandbox. This is NOT my thing, in fact I was offended by what people wrote at times. The book advisory was interesting, but I don't care to be privy to other personal "thoughts".

16. Wikis

I really liked the wikis that had current data, current books read and reviewed, and the latest programs offered. Websites often have outdated data, which really annoys me. Wikis appear to be easy to update, but someone still has to do it!
I think this would work great for next-reads for patrons and program listings. We could all get involved by posting our fav book of the month, encouraging reader's advisory and involving our customers on a different level.

15. Library 2.0

I'm glad that we're keeping up with the times particularly with trainings such as 23 Things. And, I think the new computer classes we're offering our customers will be a great asset to keep them more current.
I agree with the debates, that these principles are not new ones but part of a continuing service philosophy.

Oh-Ma-Gosh! Who knew? I guess I'm not computer savvy, defintely not internet savvy! Who has time to check out all these different search/blog/bookmarking sites and keep them updated? I hear about people spending hours each night on the computer...that's not for me.
I did learn about tagging and how Technorati/ "spiders" or "webcrawlers" use them for information about a webpage or blog.

Interesting site, I can see where it would be useful for research projects. It's a bit formal for my use, I'd rather just use my browser's bookmarks. I did find two interesting sites that have been tagged many times: A sex-offender site, creepy, I found out who's a registered sex-offender in my area: http://locator.thevision2020.com and www.estudiomopa.com , a great latin graphic design site.

I checked out LibraryThing. Interesting way to log in books read, likes/dislikes etc. It would be very useful, although I doubt I'll keep up with it. I'll try though, would be good to keep track of my husband's books, he reads like a fiend. He loves that I'm working at the library, I'm his book "connection"...

Thing 9. Finding newsfeeds. I think Bloglines search works as well as others, although Feedster sure is pretty. They all seem to come up with a mix of things, including some blogs that are ad related.

Thing 8. I learned about RSS feeds and signed up for a Bloglines newsreader account. It's pretty cool, but even though it saves time looking at individual sites, it's still time consuming so I probably won't use it much.

Thing 6. Lots of dogs and horses on Flickr. Fun way to see people's photos. I learned about Mashups. I was concerned about copyright infringement, so I did a search about that. Sure enough there are many lawsuits out there over Mashups.

Thing 5. I like Flickr and set up an account. My name is "Dreamboat Mason" and I posted a picture of my dog, Mason. It asked if I'd like to set up a web address using that name, so I did, but the link doesn't work. (?)

Lisa and I tried to post picture off Flickr to this blog but could not get it to come through.
